Skender Selected to Help Deliver Lurie Children’s New Hospital in Downers Grove

Healthcare

Skender announced today it has been selected as part of the design-build team supporting Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago as the organization begins planning a new, community-based, low-acuity pediatric hospital in the Downers Grove area.

Lurie Children’s has shared that the proposed facility is being planned to expand access to pediatric care for families in Chicago’s western suburbs and would become Lurie Children’s first inpatient hospital outside its main Streeterville campus.

A hospital designed around families—and built with local community input

According to Lurie Children’s, early plans for the Downers Grove-area hospital include a pediatric emergency department, surgery suites, inpatient beds, and pediatric subspecialties such as oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, and orthopedics.

Lurie Children’s also noted that approximately 47% of children in the western suburbs currently leave their community to receive inpatient pediatric care, and that the proposed hospital is intended to help keep care closer to home while also supporting economic opportunity in the region.

Design-build team

Lurie Children’s stated that planning is in the early stages, subject to regulatory approvals, and that it has engaged a design-build team led by Clayco, with Skender providing local healthcare design and construction expertise alongside ZGF and LJC.

“Skender is honored to again support Lurie Children’s as they plan this important expansion of pediatric inpatient access in Chicago’s suburbs,” said Brian Kane, Vice President, Skender. “Our team is committed to helping create a child- and family-centered environment that supports exceptional care, efficiency and a strong patient experience.”

Building on a track record with Lurie Children’s

Skender recently built Lurie Children’s 75,000-square-foot outpatient center in Schaumburg, further expanding the health system’s suburban reach.
